In an exciting weekend of the UIM E1 World Championship electric speedboat racing series, the team backed by international superstar DJ Steve Aoki overcame penalties in both final races to earn a tense second win of 2025 and leap to the top of the championship standings.
First time E1 host city Dubrovnik put on a majestic spectacle as the 21st century electric hydroplaning boats zipped around the turquoise waters of the Adriatic against the backdrop of the city’s impressive medieval walls.
The Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo Europe returns to the RAI Center in Amsterdam June 24 -26, a must-attend event for those driving maritime electrification and decarbonization There will be over 150 exhibitors – shipbuilders, engine and drivetrain manufacturers, battery and fuel cell suppliers, shore charging specialists and others from around the world showcasing the latest developments shaping the future of sustainable and efficient maritime technologies.
While the main focus of the event is on large ships and industrial applications, there are also a number of exhibitors that have products and systems for smaller leisure and workboats. This Plugboats Guide highlights a few below.
Arc electric boats has introduced a third model, the ‘Coast’, which offer boat buyers an electric version of the increasingly popular center consoles – at a price in line with similar sized and powered fossil fuel models.
“People love center consoles, but gas engines have held back their full potential,” says Mitch Lee, Arc’s CEO and co-founder. “The Arc Coast is what you get when you start from scratch: quiet, exhilarating performance powered by advanced software, paired with an ownership experience free from many of the headaches common with today’s gas boats.”
UK company Törkmar has launched an easily installed high torque electric boat motor that enables large propeller efficiency for displacement boats travelling on inland waterways.
The company’s motto, ‘Torque is our jam’, reflects the very thorough explanation of torque on their website, noting it is the same twisting force required to unscrew the lid of a jam jar. Less colourfully, it’s the force that your boat’s motor uses to twist the propeller through the water, allowing your boat to move, accelerate, and carry loads.
In another sign of how electric propulsion is growing in the world of sailboats, a number of electric and hybrid catamarans – both sailing and power yachts – won their category or simply turned heads in this year’s prestigious Multihull of the Year Awards presented at La Grand Motte in April.
The awards are organized by Multihulls World magazine and Multicoques Mag to celebrate and reward innovation, performance, sustainability, and liveability. Votes are cast by boating fans all over the world, with winners reflecting what the public is looking for in the multihulls of the future.
For the first time in history, a production all-electric boat travelled from one continent to another when the Candela C-8 hydrofoiled from Sotogrande, Spain, to Ceuta, North Africa in just over one hour, matching the speed of conventional fast ferries.
The record-setting voyage of 24 nautical miles (27 mi / 44 km) was undertaken to demonstrate the potential of Candela’s new P-12 electric hydrofoil ferry to deliver clean, cost-efficient transport across the Strait and along the Spanish coast. The 12 passenger boat is already hard at work in Sweden taking commuters from Stockholm’s Ekerö suburb to the city centre in the world’s first all-electric hydrofoil ferry service.
Vita Power continues to expand their fleet of electric workboats in California with the purchase by Berekeley of a VITA Seal that will be used for everything from debris removal to emergency response.
The marina joins the City of Newport Beach near Los Angeles, the San Diego Yacht Club (SDYC) and West Point Harbor near Silicon Valley as pioneers in bringing zero emission workboats to the west coast of the U.S. Over on the other side of the country Vita is also part of a project that is electrifying vessels for an oyster farm in Maine.
